‘MAKING DERBY MORE ACCESSIBLE’

There has been a ShopMobility service in Derby since 1992. In the beginning, it was part of Derby Community Transport and was based in the Bold Lane Car Park. In 1995, Derby Shopmobility was created as an independent charity with four mobility scooters, a powered wheelchair and a selection of manual wheelchairs for hire. Over the next five years, demand grew rapidly and by 2000 the fleet of mobility vehicles available to shoppers had expanded to 20.

Today the premises are conveniently located on the ground floor of the Derbion Shopping Centre Car Park (31, The Morledge), opposite the front entrance to Derby Bus Station. Shopmobility Derby has its own designated parking spaces and there is a lift nearby to take visitors straight into the shopping centre. There are 26 scooters, four powered wheelchairs and twelve manual wheelchairs for short or long-term hire. This equipment is reliable, supportive and comfortable with a variety of choices to suit a wide range of mobility needs.

I love volunteering for ShopMobility as I get to meet and talk to new people and find it very rewarding as I can help give people their independence to do the things they want too.

This job never gets old, I love working for ShopMobility and it was the best decision I made to be part a great, caring team. Every day is different and seeing people happy that they can go out and do the things they struggled with or couldn’t do is very rewarding. I’ve made some great friendships with staff and customers and am very proud to be apart of Derby ShopMobility.

Managed by a team of committed Trustees, many themselves service users, every Shopmobility member of staff or volunteer is renowned for being friendly and helpful. They always ensure all customers are confident and safe to drive before they set off. By using this service, visitors with restricted mobility need not worry about walking long distances or trying to carry heavy shopping bags. Instead, the whole city centre is accessible with confidence and peace of mind.

To help raise awareness of its services, Derby ShopMobility will be joining Derby DrivAbility (a Driving Mobility assessment centre), for a FREE mobility event on 14th June 2022 at Kingsway, Derby.
