Ilford ShopMobility: ShopMobility UK Scheme of the Month (August 2021)

Redbridge Disability Association was founded in 1967 to provide vital information and advice to people living with physical and sensory disabilities in the London Borough of Redbridge. In 2011 it was rebranded as Disability Redbridge. Ilford Shopmobility is the service arm of Disability Redbridge and provides mobility scooters and manual wheelchairs for hire – helping anyone with permanent or temporary mobility difficulties. This essential service enables people of all abilities to get around Ilford town centre independently and enjoy a more rewarding day out.

Ilford ShopMobility is located in the Exchange Shopping Centre and provides 10 scooters and 12 manual wheelchairs for short or long-term hire. This equipment is supportive and comfortable with a variety of choices to suit a wide range of mobility needs. It is well maintained and reliable. Our ShopMobility volunteers are known for being friendly and helpful. A range of information is kept in the office and people are signposted to other helpful services. Ilford ShopMobility allows service users to access all the facilities of Ilford town centre and not worry about walking long distances or trying to carry heavy shopping bags. 

Ann Garrard has volunteered at the scheme for many years as she understands the challenges people with a disability can face. She became aware and involved because her son is on the autistic spectrum which opened a new world to her.

She says, “I want to help people with mobility issues to do things they normally couldn’t do, to give them independence and to do everyday activities without any worries. This why I am proud to volunteer for Ilford ShopMobility.”
